The 2013 BMW X1 doesn’t draw you in with its looks the same way its larger X3 sibling does, but overall the compact crossover manages to convey BMW’s key styling cues effectively despite its smaller canvas. At times the design seems busy, especially from the rear. Inside, the X1 delivers a mix of soft-touch materials and plastic that comes across as unusually ‘firm’ for a company so focused on its luxury reputation.
The 2013 BMW X1 will be offered with essentially identical drivetrain options when compared to the BMW X3. The xDrive28i model comes with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 245 horsepower, while the xDrive35i features a 306 horsepower, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. An eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive will help to ensure that either edition of the X1 is quick enough to wear the BMW badge.
The 2013 BMW X1 occupies a somewhat unusual niche that few other models on display at the New York Auto Show can claim. Smaller than vehicles like the Acura RDX and the Mercedes-Benz GLK, the X1 comes across almost as a tall hatch rather than a proper crossover and doesn’t directly compete against any products currently offered by its Teutonic competitors in the U.S. market. Fans of the Infiniti EX may also want to check out the BMW X1 to satisfy their craving for a fun-to-drive luxury hauler.
The 2013 BMW X1 was definitely not a surprise to New York Auto Show attendees, as its popularity in Europe and to the north has been well-documented. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the X1 is just how much room is actually available inside its compact proportions: the diminutive crossover treats rear passengers quite well, and cargo space is also decent. Think of the BMW X1 as a wagon replacement for the luxury hatchback set.
