Autobytel attended an event in New York City to unveil the 2015 Cadillac Escalade, which is one of the largest and most expensive vehicles produced by General Motors. The 2015 model year marks the introduction of a new generation of the luxury sport utility vehicle, so Autobytel talked to Ed Welburn, who is the Vice President of Global Design for General Motors. This video is hosted by Daniel Gray, Road Test Editor for Autobytel, who was able to spend some time with a dark gray metallic preproduction example of the 2015 Escalade. The new generation of this Cadillac SUV has a lot of visual similarities to the previous generation, but features some new design cues, as well. The goal during the design process of the new Escalade, Ed Welburn said, was to first establish the vehicle’s proportions, establishing relationships such as the way the wheels fit into the wheel well. These guidelines set the tone for the rest of the vehicle’s design. As large and imposing a vehicle as the Cadillac Escalade is, the General Motors design team took care to make the styling cues subtle, such as the creases and lines that flow along the vehicle’s body. The front end, though, remains the new Escalade’s focal point. Ed Welburn explained that the headlights are one of his favorite elements of the new Escalade’s design, flanking the front end with crystalline housings and LED illumination, though there’s also plenty more to see in the Escalade’s latest generation.
