Getting the rubber right on the 2015 Buick Verano is no easy task, but it's an important one. After all, choosing the proper tires is vital to creating a premium cabin environment and that, in turn, is a key differentiator for today's Buicks. As a result, the engineers involved did more than just "choose" the tires for the 2015 Buick Verano, they worked with the manufacturer, Continental Tire, to ensure optimum performance for all drivers—even though it meant relying on two separate tire-and-wheel setups.
The standard 2015 Buick Verano, positioned as the lineup's efficiency leader, gets 17-inch P225/50R17 tires with notably low rolling resistance for higher fuel-economy ratings. They get the job done, too, providing Verano owners with EPA grades of up to 21 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. As for the performance-oriented 2015 Buick Verano Turbo, it wears 18-inch P235/45R18 tires to help serve up crisper handling to match the car's 250 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque.
But in both cases, tire engineers put in significant effort to support this kind of individualized performance with superior all-around driving dynamics. That included working with different materials, adding subtreads, adjusting the tires' "footprints" and changing the angles of their steel belts to find just the right combination of characteristics. With that in mind, even the base Verano serves up an enthusiastic driving experience, while the hi-po, turbocharged model can ring up an EPA line of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.
Added Chris Arabian, a GM tire-development engineer: “For the Verano, we needed to ensure we provided ride comfort, while also balancing fuel economy and rolling resistance, and delivering an engaging driving experience.
"Ultimately, when we optimize a tire, it means we can potentially reduce some cost, complexity, or weight elsewhere within the vehicle and still deliver the targeted level of refinement."
