The 2015 BMW 2 Series represents the entry point to the BMW car roster in terms of both size and pricing, offering two engine choices as well as coupe and convertible body styles that, for the new model year, can be enhanced with the automaker’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.
There’s also a new Track Handling Package for the 2015 BMW 228i coupe, which benefits from upgrades like variable sport steering, Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, and both sport brakes and an adaptive suspension from BMW’s “M” performance-engineering team.
BMW’s goal was to bring its traditional design approach to a new, smaller segment with the 2 Series, but while giving the line its own unique identity, and the results speak for themselves: Although both the 228i and the more powerful M235i showcase the current BMW grille and headlight treatment, for example, the pair also boast a series-exclusive lower character line as a noticeably dynamic style cue.
As one would expect from one of the Ultimate Driving Machines, the cabin of the 2 Series is a driver-focused environment, although there is a standard “Easy Entry” feature to make getting into the rear seats less challenging, and that back row—indeed, the entire car—does happen to be significantly larger than in the line’s 1 Series predecessors. Of course, that being said, the 2 Series also provides premium comforts such as heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a variety of leather, wood and aluminum cabin accents
Also, owners can personalize their rides with Sport Line and M Sport content packages that provide additional advances in sporty appearance and aggressive handling.
Leading off the 2015 BMW 2 Series lineup is the 228i coupe, outfitted with a 2.0-liter “TwinPower” engine that integrates a twin-scroll turbocharger, BMW’s variable valve-control setup and direct injection. Backed by that technology, the engine delivers a nice blend of performance and efficiency, matching 240 hp and 255 lb.-ft. of torque with EPA ratings of 23 mpg city/36 mpg highway/28 mpg with a standard eight-speed automatic. That powertrain enables 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds, too.
The M235i ups the ante in terms of performance, relying on a Twinpower V6 for 320 hp, 330 lb.-ft. of torque and an automatically transmissioned 0-60 sprint of 4.6 seconds; and again, the EPA ratings are surprisingly robust. The tale of the tape: 21 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. For additional driving excitement, the M235i features a multi-mode vehicle-dynamics system and launch control, and yes, a six-speed manual transmission is a no-cost option.
The 2015 BMW 2 Series has earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, thanks to “good” grades in all crash testing and an “advanced” mark for its available front crash-prevention technology. Speaking of which, 2 Series can be ordered with not only a collision warning system, but also lane-departure warning, an automatic “Parking Assistant,” a rearview camera, automatic headlights, adaptive cruise control and automatic crash notification (as part of the BMW ConnectedDrive system).
BMW 2 Series MSRPs range from $32,500 for the 228i coupe up to $47,700 for the M235i convertible and can further include the iDrive operating system (with 6.5-inch. screen), navigation (with 8.8-inch screen and BMW touch controller), app integration (with select smartphones), BMW ConnectedDrive concierge services, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
