As family cars go, Nissan’s Altima is definitely a mould-breaker. The four-door sedan thoroughly lives up to Nissan’s reputation for strong performance, while simultaneously offering all of the attributes a growing family needs for their transportation solution. Redesigned for the 2013 model year, the Altima is also one of the freshest models in its competitive set. Power comes from a choice of two engines; a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder is the base powerplant, producing 182 horsepower and 180 ft-lbs of torque. The “big” engine is Nissan’s 3.5-liter V6 delivering 270 horsepower and 251 ft-lbs of torque. Both engines are paired with a continuously variable transmission to route power to the front wheels. Available comfort and convenience features include automatic headlights, remote ignition, keyless entry and start, a touchscreen interface, voice control, navigation, and smartphone application integration. Safety features include blind-spot monitoring, a rear-view camera, rear cross traffic alert, and lane departure warning. NHTSA awarded the Altima five stars in all of its crash testing procedures, while the IIHS says the Altima scored its highest rating (“Good”) in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength tests. The Altima scored the Institute’s second highest rating (“Acceptable”) in the new small-overlap front test.
