2014 Honda Accord Hybrid: First to 50 MPG

With the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid now in production, it’s time to once again reset the fuel-efficiency leaderboard for midsize sedan hybrids. Per the automaker, the third member on the Accord sedan roster will be the first car in its segment to touch 50 mpg, which it will reach in city driving. The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid’s full ratings are shown below in comparison to its current crop of competitors; to be clear, I’m talking about the hybrid models of:

• 2014 Honda Accord—50 mpg city/45 mpg highway/47 mpg combined
• 2014 Ford Fusion—47/47/47
• 2014 Toyota Camry—43/39/41
• 2013 Hyundai Sonata—36/40/38
• 2013 Kia Optima—36/40/38

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu also offers a model with its eAssist light-electrification system—what used to be called a “mild hybrid”—and that returns 25 mpg city/36 mpg highway/29 mpg combined; just note that those numbers actually are lower than the ratings for the conventionally powered 2014 Honda Accord, which can post an EPA line of 27/36/30.

As further advantages, the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will provide a best-in-class driving range of up to 673 miles on one tank of gas, and it’s being built in the United States at the automaker’s production facility in Marysville, Ohio.

"Even before it hits showrooms this fall, the Accord Hybrid is already surpassing the competition and claiming segment leadership," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of auto operations at American Honda. "For customers looking for a 50-mpg-rated four-door sedan, there is no other choice than the 2014 Accord Hybrid."

(For those curious about the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In—already at dealerships—it provides hybrid-enhanced fuel-economy ratings of 47 mpg city/46 mpg highway/46 mpg combined, but then combines those marks with an electric driving range of 13 miles at 115 MPGe combined.)
