Even as the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray has been an early star of this year’s awards season, already taking home multiple “car of the year” prizes, there’s been another all-new model that has nearly matched the Stingray’s trophy total: The 2014 Honda Accord. The immensely popular midsize sedan just added the 2014 Green Car of the Year Award to a list of honors that also includes a place on Car and Driver magazine’s annual “10Best Cars” roster, as well as residual and resale value awards from ALG and Kelley Blue Book, respectively.

In recently winning this year’s Green Car recognition, the 2014 Honda Accord beat out four other finalists—the Audi A6 TDI, BMW 328d, Mazda Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla— by bringing a full range of high-efficiency choices to the mainstream midsize segments. For example:

  • The gas-powered 2014 Honda Accord, offered in both coupe and sedan configurations, delivers EPA grades of up to 27 mpg city/36 mpg highway/30 mpg combined.
  • Raising the green bar even higher, the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid can reach 50 mpg city/45 mpg highway/47 mpg combined.
  • The 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid delivers both 13 miles of electrically assisted travel, at 115 MPGe, then allows an additional 570 miles of gasoline-hybrid travel, with EPA ratings of 47 mpg city/46 mpg highway/46 mpg combined.

"With its efficient internal combustion, hybrid, and plug-in choices, the 2014 Honda Accord delivers exactly what consumers are looking for today,” confirmed Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. “It all comes together this year for the Accord in ways that speak to significant environmental performance built into a mainstream, volume model that's a joy to drive. The Accord is a deserving winner of Green Car Journal's 2014 Green Car of the Year."

Added Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of Automobile Operations at American Honda: "Led by the 2014 Accord Hybrid, the entire Accord lineup really embodies the promise of the Honda brand to deliver both fun-to-drive enjoyment and outstanding fuel efficiency at the highest level. I want to say thank you to Green Car Journal, not just for honoring Accord, but for shining a spotlight on the environment and our shared vision for an ultra-low carbon future."

This also marks the second time in the past three years that one of the brand’s products has been named Green Car of the Year, as the 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas earned the title in 2011.
