All-new Supercar Shows off Z51 Performance Package, Magnetic Ride Control
The Bowtie brand has been boasting that the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray would be “the most capable standard Corvette model ever,” and now drivers are beginning to find out exactly how “capable” the car really is—at least when it’s also kitted out with the Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Ride Control suspension technology. In that particular configuration, and relying on its standard LT-1 V8 engine, the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray can transform 450 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque into a 0-60 time of just 3.8 seconds.
The car stops as well as it starts, too, with drivers able to haul the Corvette down from 60 to 0 in a brisk 107 feet, and in between take off and landing, the Stingray can fly through the quarter mile in 12 seconds flat while carving the the corners to the tune of 1.03 g.
Putting it all together on the Grand Course at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR), the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray reeled off a lap time of 2:51.78 on the 4.2-mile circuit in recent testing. To put that into context, consider: Each year, the folks over at Car and Driver bring a selection of high performers to VIR for what they call their “Lightning Lap” competition, designed to discover the best all-around track car in America. And if the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray had been in the 2013 test, it would have come in second place, trailing only the Ferrari 458 Italia—a car that’s more than four times pricier than the Corvette and stickers well over $200K.
Here’s where the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray slots in among the 2013 top-ten Lightning Lap times from Car and Driver:
Or, as expressed by Tadge Juechter, Corvette’s chief engineer: “Considered alone, the acceleration, braking and cornering performance of the Corvette Stingray is truly impressive. More significant is how well they work together, resulting in a lap time at VIR that places the new Stingray in the upper echelon of all sports cars.”
