The 2014 BMW M235i is an all new model and is the brand’s smallest coupe. The 2-Series coupe lineup was introduced to replace the slow-selling BMW 1-Series, and, like other BMW cars, the “M” designates a higher performance model. Autobytel’s Road Test Editor, Aaron Gold, checked out the new BMW M235i to see how much the 2-Series model lineup is an improvement over the slow-selling 1-Series cars. This luxury sport compact is a little longer and wider than its predecessor, with a sportier design and better proportions. With a starting price of $43,100, the 2014 M235i comes with a turbocharged 3-liter 6-cylinder engine paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, yielding 320 horsepower. The automatic can be swapped out in favor of a 6-speed manual at no extra cost. The M-Sport Performance Package provides a bunch of upgrades, including a better braking system, enhanced steering, and an adjustable suspension system. The cabin is driver-centric, with a focus on the analog gauge cluster. Deeply bolstered sport seats provide a comfortable ride up front, although backseat space is severely compromised with limited leg room and head clearance. Though the engine is powerful, the M235i’s weight may hinder its performance and handling somewhat. The 2014 BMW M235i is rated for fuel economy 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.
