Next-gen Premium Crossover Lowers Starting Price
Honda’s premium division has kicked off sales of the all-new 2014 Acura MDX. The sophisticated three-row crossover is the latest in a rush of new products from Acura and is being offered initially with an MSRP that starts at $42,290—$990 less than the entry point to the 2013 MDX. Of course, a key part of that price reduction comes from the fact the 2014 Acura MDX can be configured with two-wheel drive, which is a first for the MDX family, but the net result should be a notable sales boon.
Consider: Although the record-setting Acura RDX now holds the crown, the Acura MDX had a long reign as the brand’s top-selling vehicle. And this was the case despite being priced with a built-in premium against some of its top rivals, thanks to its standard all-wheel-drive system. The 2014 Acura MDX will still be priced slightly higher than the comparable Infiniti JX, for example, but it will be a much more manageable difference of $1,050 (about 2.5 percent).
Then there’s just the overall momentum at Acura to take into account. As mentioned, the brand has been keeping up a fairly steady stream of new vehicle launches, including entries like the Acura ILX, in the premium compact sedan segment; the redesigned RDX, succeeding nicely against other premium compact crossovers; and the Acura RLX flagship sedan, currently earning a few hundred sales a month in the notoriously low-volume competition amongst other large lux contenders.

Creating a distinctive and sophisticated design for a three-row crossover is no easy task, but the 2014 Acura MDX catches your attention with subtly curved sheet metal, a strongly sculpted face, and the brand’s standard JewelEye LED headlamps providing the highlights. LED lighting distinguishes the cabin, too, where an also-standard second-row seating system delivers extensive fore-and-aft seat travel and easy access to the third row. All rows will enjoy the 432-watt sound system that’s standard on the 2014 Acura MDX as well, along with an ideal listening environment enhanced by acoustic glass front windows and windshield.
Other notable standard and available treats supplied by the 2014 Acura MDX:
The party line from Acura: “The all-new 2014 MDX offers even higher levels of luxury comfort and quietness, together with exhilarating dynamic performance, class-leading fuel economy ratings, and advanced safety features, and an even more luxurious, technology-packed and versatile passenger cabin.”
