The Toyota Prius is one of the most efficient vehicles on sale in the U.S., but there is another version that is even more efficient and that's the Prius Plug-In. Much like the standard Prius, the Plug-In uses Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive which pairs the same gas and electric engine producing a total output of 134 horsepower.
The difference with the Prius Plug-In is the battery. Whereas the regular Prius uses 1.4 kWh NiMH battery, the Prius Plug-In uses a larger 4.4 kWh Lithium-Ion battery. This allows the Prius Plug-In to travel up to 11 miles at speeds up to 62 MPH on electric power alone. Recharging the battery takes about three hours on a 120 Volt charger and 1.5 hours on a 240 Volt charger. The EPA rates the 2013 Prius Plug-In at 95 MPGe when on electric power and 51 City/49 Highway/50 Combined when on hybrid power.
A 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In starts at $32,000 for the base model and $39,525 for the Advanced model. Please note that there is a $2,500 tax credit for the Plug-In. Competitors to the Prius Plug-In include the Chevrolet Volt and Ford C-Max Energi.
