Last year, the Chevrolet Equinox earned high marks for delivering 32 mpg on the highway – well above the average for SUVs. This year, the 2012 Equinox returns with the same great fuel figures and competitive pricing. Keep reading to find out what's new on the 2012 Chevy Equinox and review specs, features and safety.
The 2012 Chevy Equinox kicks off the new model year with improved safety from a standard rearview camera. Optional safety features now include forward collision alert and a lane-departure warning system. Finally, the rear seat video entertainment system that was available last year is no longer offered. Beyond these minor features changes, the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox is identical to last year's model.
Most reviewers agree the Equinox is a handsome, albeit not entirely stunning compact SUV, which bodes well for the 2012 model since it carries over unchanged. If you're a fan of streamlined and simplistic design, then the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox will likely appeal to you.
Inside, the Equinox focuses on utility by delivering an ergonomic layout that incorporates both comfortable seating and plenty of handy storage options. While the Equinox is far from luxurious, the atmosphere is pleasant enough to meet most tastes. With no available third-row seating, the Chevy SUV seats a maximum of five. In both the front and rear, legroom is adequate for adult drivers. Maximum cargo space is listed at 63.7 cubic feet, which is about ten cubes less than direct competitors such as the Honda CR-V.
As far as utility vehicles go, the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox is a good option for those looking to achieve good gas mileage – especially if you do a lot of highway driving. The vehicle's 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine earns a maximum of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway (26 mpg combined). At 182 horsepower, performance isn't exactly exhilarating. However, most will agree that the vehicle is not underpowered.
A 264-hp V-6 engine is also available for those who aren't quite as concerned about fuel efficiency. These models earn an estimated 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
Along with the addition of a rearview camera, standard safety features for the Chevrolet Equinox include antilock brakes, six airbags, traction control, stability control, brake assist and OnStar technology. In crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the SUV with a best-possible rating of "Good" in both frontal- and side-impact tests.

The base MSRP for the 2012 Chevy Equinox is listed at $23,450; an average price for the class. However, solid competitors such as the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage can be had for below $19,000. Standard equipment for the Equinox includes 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, Bluetooth, rear seat recline and six-speaker stereo with satellite radio.
The mid-level Chevy Equinox LT trim is available with roof rack rails, heated side mirrors, seven-inch touchscreen, power driver's seat, eight-speaker premium stereo and more. The top-tier LTZ trim also comes with a power liftgate, automatic headlights, leather seats and driver memory settings. If you're interested in these amenities, you can expect a sticker price of around $29,000 for an Equinox LTZ.
